They're what I enjoyed the most when first I became a teacher in the early 70s.

Warlick is correct, of course, that 'we have the ability to do that today'. We certainly have the technology to assist with those.

I guess, given the constraints of curriculum/framework, technology at least provides a way that can almost transcend the time factor in some respects. Kid's are wonderfully adaptable creatures - they always were.

Perhaps we have to take more advantage of their adaptability though, by providing them with the necessaries, safely, so that they can do more for themselves, with their teachers pointing the ways - as you suggest.

Ka kiteBlogger In Middle-earthhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08722634477041121797noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2107060758629396184.post-71921708045672145392008-07-05T15:17:00.000-07:002008-07-05T15:17:00.000-07:00Ken,You ask two great questions,How are teachers t...Ken,
You ask two great questions,

How are teachers to motivate their students to learn in the important areas of the curriculum not covered by a standard?

How are teachers to bring a rich diversity to their lessons on many of the life-relevant issues not covered in the Framework?

Both questions identify all of 'our' curriculum(s) and Frameworks as limiting factors in our ability to meaningfully teach and have our students meaningfully learn.

I think it is the 'side trips' that Warlick talks about:
http://pairadimes.davidtruss.com/warlicks-k12-online-keynote-06/
where really wonderful learning experiences happen. Until the curriculum and Framework restrictions are loosened it will be up to teachers to boldly go where they know they can motivate and encourage engaging learning experiences... despite the 'standards'!David Trusshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00519890493979141068noreply@blogger.com
